We have been to Quebec Citymany times over the last two decades and seem to always stick to our favourite hotels within the walls of Old Quebec. Keeping mindful of hotel prices when making our choices, the top-notch service, comfort, amenities, and location are the reasons that we stay at these top hotels in Old Quebec City.
Inside the walls
Quebec City has many hotel options to keep visitors comfortable during their stay. Inside the walls of Old Quebec, you will find the city’s most traditional architecture of stone buildings and winding cobblestone streets giving it a unique European feel. You will enjoy the convenience of the central location to many of the tourist attractions and some of the city’s best restaurants. Within the walls, whether it is the upper or lower town, you will feel the magic of this city come alive. These are our reviews and picks for top hotels in Old Quebec city.
Château Frontenac – Upper Town $$$
The Château Frontenacmakes for a memorable stay while in Quebec City. It is definitely one of the most photographed pieces of architecture in this great city. This iconic castle-like hotel has over 600 guest rooms and suites. This hotel is located in Upper-Town conveniently within walking distance of many sights, shops, and local restaurants. You can also easily access lower town via the funicular right outside of the Château Frontenac.
You can choose from rooms surrounding the main tower usually for a lower price. While some of the rooms in the tower on the upper floors can give you some spectacular views of the city and the St Lawrence river, they also command the highest prices. Try to stay in one of the corner rooms with a turret for the ultimate castle feel!
The rooms at the Château Frontenac are all well-appointed with all the amenities you will need for your stay. If you’re driving, you can self-park your vehicle or use their impeccable valet service.
There are also several renowned bars and restaurants within this hotel should you opt to stay in when dining. Many visitors from other hotels come to the Château Frontenac to experience these great venues.
Being a guest at the Château Frontenac should be experienced at least once in your lifetime. Depending on the season, you can sometimes find various deals by booking online, especially through the hotel’s website.
Le Germain Hôtel– Lower Town $$$
This boutique hotel located in heart of lower town offers both comfort and luxury to its guests. With only 60 rooms on 8 floors makes this hotel a great retreat as opposed to the larger hotels. While we have stayed at several hotels during our many visits over the years, this is our favourite.
Their rooms are well-appointed with lovely furnishings. After a dreamy sleep in their wonderful beds with some of the best linens available, you can head downstairs for breakfast.
Included with your stay is an incredible daily breakfast buffet which offers fresh croissants of different flavours (chocolate is our favourite!), cheeses, fruit, hard-boiled eggs and cereals. Beverages include juices, milk and dairy alternatives. There is a self-serve coffee bar in the lobby available 24 hours. This machine produces some of the best cafe lattes and cappuccinos I’ve had all automatically served from the touch of a button. Many tea choices are available to you as well.
The hotel’s lobby area also has a cozy fireplace with plenty of seating to enjoy the ambiance. We have enjoyed many cups of teas and lattes as well as some great local beers while sitting in the lobby area after a busy day of sightseeing. The hotel has a small 24-hour gym with the essentials for a workout. On-site valet parking ensures that your vehicle will be well taken care of and available upon request. This hotel is also pet friendly.
Le GermainHôtel is the perfect hotel for a home base on your trip. The reviews for this hotel continue to be stellar and remains one of the top hotels in Old Quebec City is regarded as one of the top 1o hotels in Canada by Condé Nast Traveler.
Auberge Saint-Antoine – Lower Town $$$$
Another lovely boutique hotel is the Auberge Saint-Antoine Relais & Châteaux. The historic facade of this hotel gives way to indoor contemporary decor. There are artifacts on display discovered during an archaeological dig of the property. Each of the 95 rooms and suites has its own unique story with artifacts on display right outside your door.
You can also enjoy a room with a riverside terrace during your stay. The rooms are top-notch with excellent beds, linens, ample storage, and furniture for your stay. Other room amenities include double sink vanities, heated bathroom floors, and fireplaces. The hotel also has valet parking on-site.
At this hotel is the renowned restaurant Chez Muffy.
